Fluvial Discharge Rates of Martian Gullies: Slope Measurements from Stereo Hirise Images and Numerical Modeling of Sediment Transport

چکیده

Introduction: A stereo pair of HiRISE images of a pole-facing crater slope at 38S, 218E shows many fresh looking gullies. After measuring slopes using the stereo viewing geometry, we estimate the expected fluvial discharge rates using theory from Kleinhans [1] and Ikeda [2]. We also develop a numerical model of sediment transport based on theory presented in Kleinhans [1] to determine the time required to incise to the observed alcove depth. Combining the discharge estimates with the duration we estimate a total water volume needed to form these gullies. Finally, groundwater discharge has been a suggested mechanism for forming gullies on Mars [3-4]. We test whether groundwater discharge can deliver the water required by our model results.

Numerical modeling of Martian gully sediment transport: Testing the fluvial hypothesis

[1] Using a stereo pair of HiRISE images of a pole‐facing crater slope at 38°S, 218°E, we measure topographic profiles along nine gullies. Typical slopes of the interior channel region (above the depositional apron) are ∼20°. We test the hypothesis that sediment transport on gully slopes occurs via fluvial transport processes by developing a numerical sediment transport model based on steep flu...

Debris Flow as a Mechanism for Forming Martian Gullies

The current low temperatures and pressures at the martian surface are not conducive to the stability of liquid water; hence the discovery of recently active, fluvial-like gullies [1, 2] presents an apparent paradox: how can these fluvial landforms have occurred if water is not stable at the surface? To approach this problem we have compared the morphometric properties of gullies in various sett...

Measuring Slopes of Gully Fan Apices Using Digital Elevation Models

Introduction: Martian gullies are defined by [1] to be slope features comprised of an upslope alcove, a midslope channel, and a downslope depositional fan. Due to their relative youth and similarities to waterrelated features on Earth, the Martian gullies have attracted much attention since their discovery by the Mars Orbiter Camera [1]. Many erosional agents for the gullies have been proposed ...

Small-scale morphologic properties of martian gullies: insights from analysis of HiRISE images

Introduction: The discovery of abundant, geologically recent gullies on Mars in Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) images [1] has led to numerous studies examining potential mechanisms for recent fluid or fluid-rich surface processes [e.g., 1-2]. The process or processes involved in Martian gully formation provide important insights into Martian geologic and volatile history. ...

Terraced Cutbanks and Longitudinal Bars in Gully Channels on Mars: Evidence for Multiple Episodes of Fluvial Transport

Introduction: First identified by Malin and Edgett [1], gullies are among the youngest and most enigmatic geomorphic features on Mars. Originally hypothesized to be the result of confined aquifer breakouts, they have subsequently been interpreted to be the result of dry mass flows (e. shown persuasively that the global distribution of gullies is preferential. The greatest concentrations of gull...
